OAT ATA Spec 2000 Solutions

Aerospace manufacturers, logistics companies and airlines require more
detailed tracking of aircraft component parts from origin and procurement
through maintenance and repair operations, in order to ensure part
documentation accuracy and aircraft safety. The Air Transport Association of
America (ATA), the industry trade organization for the leading U.S. airlines,
recently expanded requirements for component parts tracking in ATA Spec
2000, with specific recommendations for automating part traceability with RFID in Spec2000 Chapter 9.

(Auto-ID) is the preferred technology for automatic data collection because it is the simplest means available to meet the airlines' tracking needs.”

- Air Transport Association (Preamble to Spec 2000, Chapter 9)

RFID Part Marking  & Traceability
Part marking with RFID provides benefits across the value chain. Aerospace manufacturers are increasingly using high-memory RFID tags to mark specific components that require monitoring throughout their useful life. By embedding information about a component part directly on an attached tag that stays with the part, its history is always readily available at any point in the part’s service life. This is particularly important for maintenance, repair and overhaul organizations (MRO) which may not have internet connectivity at the point of service.

Process Automation & Integration
OATSystems’ ATA Spec 2000 Solutions automate part marking and traceability, leveraging an aerospace manufacturer’s existing business processes and enterprise systems. OAT ATA Spec 2000 Solutions incorporate proven, automated processes for applying RFID tags to products within a production or distribution facility. Based on the OAT Foundation Suite™, the solutions incorporate RFID best practices, developed across hundreds of deployments. Solution packages include configurable processes for encoding, applying, and verifying RFID tags, with optional processes for ERP system integration, work-in-process tracking, materials management, kitting, shipping & receiving.

“Adoption of industry standards and development of high-memory RFID tags mean airplane-parts tracking, among suppliers, manufacturers, airlines and maintenance companies – is poised for flight”.

– Elizabeth Wasserman, RFID Journal

Aerospace suppliers can gain additional visibility into their own operations by tracking component parts through manufacturing and logistics, and by enriching data in ERP, WMS, MMS and Project Management systems. OAT ATA Spec 2000 Solutions provide options for basic tagging, systems integration and process optimization. OAT’s ATA Spec 2000 Solutions are based on successful RFID deployments with Aerospace OEMs, Defense Contractors and Tier 1 suppliers, in process areas  such as inbound receiving, work-in-process tracking, tool tracking and audit & attestation.
